I spent about 5 hours last night, and 7 more hours today cleaning up my browser's reading list and bookmarks. I often think there is little cost to adding something to a reading list, watch later list, bookmarks, or saving a file for later, but it adds up. Eventually, we pay for it in either the time to clean it up, or the mental weight of it all as we try to manage the chaos.
12 hours in, and it's just the tip of the iceberg. I could realistically spend a full month or two just cleaning up all the digital clutter I've accumulated over the last 10-20 years. Of the 450 reading list items (some dating back to 2016 when I probably last did this), and hundreds of bookmarks I went through, I'd say over 90% ended up as trash, or the links were already dead.
I'd like to say that going forward, I will put the same rigor into deciding to save a digital item as I do bringing a physical item into my home, but I know that isn't true. Without physical constraints, the cost will eventually feel low again, and things will build up over time, since it is so easy for them to be out of sight.
